The Rhetoric Worship Band Presents

Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs

Liner notes and album credits below

Psalm 149:1b: “Sing to the LORD a new song,
his praise in the assembly of his faithful people.”
At the beginning of every year, the Rhetoric Worship Band gathers for dinner & fellowship before the work of rehearsals truly begins. Last August, we read a devotion together from Pastor Zac Hicks’ book Before We Gather on Psalm 149 that was all about lifting to the Lord a new song of original music. Hicks’ devotion We finished our gathering by praying together as a band that in addition to playing old & well-trod songs, we would be inspired this year to create new songs to praise God with.Ever-faithful, God has gifted our group an outpouring of creativity this year. The Rhetoric Worship Band’s album Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs includes original works by students from the Rhetoric Songwriting Class, including a congregational setting of Psalm 103, our all-school scripture memory for the year. It also includes several hymn arrangements created by students, and one cover of a contemporary CCM song that we feel we have an excellent and unique rendition of.This album is a testament to God’s faithfulness to our music program and community in providing us with the resources to worship Him well. What started as a rag-tag group of students put together to lead worship for End of Year Program ’22 has turned into a dedicated team of Christians faithful to the task of leading our school in worship. In this album, you’ll hear contributions from seasoned seniors, and hardworking first year students. We gratefully offer up this musical excellence as a symbol of the musicianship God has given our students over the last few years of praising Him together. This album was mixed & mastered by outgoing Music Technology Intern Noah Bishop, who completed this labor as part of his senior project requirements. Our emerging music program owes a debt to Noah’s standard of excellence in the realm of AV, and this album is a symbol of what he leaves behind at our school upon his departure.Colossians 3:16 commands the Christian to “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” It is our hope that this album offering blesses you to do just this.Grace and Peace,Robin McLaughlin Conine
